Advice From Greats S.L. Al-Hakim June 24, 2023
The question as presented is in regards to one who has in the past committed sins. Now, Alhamdulillah, he has succeeded, he has repented, and he has truly repented. Years have passed, and he has truly repented of his sins. He has repented, but his memories remain and do not leave him.
And your question was, is there a concern that he may not have been forgiven the sins, and that he may have a chance of forgiveness? And that those memories themselves are bothering the person… so what can one do?
First, Ahsanu Zannabi-Allah. Be certain. The one who sees that his past is regretful and, Alhamdulillah, he has succeeded, and is determined that he will not commit sins – be certain that, Alhamdulillah, repentance has been accepted. It is possible that his actions will mean people will follow him for their own rights, demanding something…. In general, and I am talking about the past prayers, the past fasting of food, he has the opportunity to come forward and perform it bit by bit. He will find a way to achieve repayment over time. But be certain that if there are two, Alhamdulillah, by the grace and mercy of Allah, repentance has been accepted. Do not worry.
In terms of the memories, the elders also say, when you have truly repented of a sin, try not to remember it. They recommend, the elders recommend, that it may be in the Jami’ Al-As’adat of the late Naraki, that he says, do not remember it. Why are you remembering it? As soon as it comes, do something to get rid of it… First he will be angry, then he will be angry, and then he will be sad. Do not be sad. Do not remember it again and again. No. Get rid of it. At that moment, say
لا حول و لا قوة الا بالله
استغفر الله و اتوب اليه
la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah astaghfirullah rabbi wa atubu ilaih
Finished. Move on. Get rid of it. God willing, he will help you. Keep going…
