Divine Tranquility: The Secret to a Steady Heart – Episode 25

Summary

In the twenty-fifth episode of our series, we further reflect on the divine gift that steadies the believer’s heart amidst life’s turbulence. This gift, known as sakīnah or divine tranquility, is not just a feeling; it is a spiritual state that Allah SWT sends directly to illuminate our path and fortify our faith.

1. The Subtle Blessing of Divine Tranquility in Islamic Faith

The blessing that clears confusion and calms the storm within, which is the Divine tranquillity that is instilled in the heart of the believers, can often be overlooked and not considered to be significant.  Yet it is a gentle descent from Allah SWT that replaces anxiety with clarity and frantic energy with purposeful focus.  The exegesis of Majma Al Bayan highlights this subtle blessing that allows the believer to have foresight.

When our hearts cloud with stress, our ability to think strategically diminishes. We spend our energy merely managing our emotions, like a car struggling in first gear. With the gift of sakīnah, we shift into higher gears. We can then direct our full capacity towards making sound, calculated decisions with a peaceful mind. This blessing is shown in the Holy Qur’anic verse:

هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ

It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith
(Surah Al-Fath, 48:4)

In this way, a calm heart becomes the foundation for greater conviction.

2. How Enemies Target Muslim Tranquility Through Division and Stress

Our spiritual adversaries understand the power of a peaceful heart. They actively work to ensure this heavenly calm does not settle in the lands of the believers. Their methods are varied and relentless, from sowing sectarian division to imposing economic sanctions and inciting warfare.

Their goal is to create an environment of perpetual stress, anger, and despair. They design this external chaos to breed internal schisms and paralyse the community. The divine response to this plot is the direct bestowal of sakīnah. The very stress the enemy tries to impose transforms into a deep, unshakeable peace within the believer’s chest, neutralising their schemes from the inside out. This is the profound power of divine tranquility: it turns external pressure into internal, unassailable serenity.

3. Quranic Examples of Divine Tranquility in Key Battles and Moments

History, as the Holy Qur’an relates, shows this truth. Take the Battle of Hunayn, where some Muslims not only felt confident due to their large numbers, but where very proud of the size of their army, looking over the army in awe of themselves. That confidence shattered, and they faced defeat.  Victory is not achieved by numbers!

لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْئًا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ

Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all. And the earth was confining for you with its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:25)

Their reliance on material strength failed them.

Victory came not from numbers, but from divine intervention.

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ

Then Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers angels whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:26)

Similarly, in the perilous moments inside the Cave of Thawr, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH reassured his companion:

إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا السُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

If you do not aid the Prophet PBUH – Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.’ And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah – that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.”,
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:40)

In each case, this heavenly calm preceded divine support and ultimate triumph.

May this same divine tranquility descend upon our hearts today. Let it clear our vision, quiet our anxieties, and grant us the insightful clarity to face our challenges with unwavering faith and peaceful resolve.
