In this instalment of our series, we reflect on the profound reality of divine witnessing, continuing the thread from our previous discussion on the nature of hypocrites and idolaters. The verses of Surah Al-Fath present a soulful description of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) mission, one that intimately shapes our spiritual awareness.
Ayah 9 of Surah Fath starts with “إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا” – We have sent you as a witness – and it is this conversation that will lead the podcast…
A common understanding holds that Allah SWT alone observes our deeds. The Holy Quran clarifies that the Prophet PBUH also carries this profound capacity as a witness. He bears witness in this world and will testify on the Day of Judgement.
And thus We have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you.
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:143)
How does this knowledge shape a believer’s life? For the sincere heart, it becomes a powerful motivator. Realising that the Prophet PBUH and the righteous witnesses see our deeds inspires us to perform every action in the best possible way. We seek to please them through our obedience and good character in order to reach the pleasure of Allah swt.
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:119)
This dual role is central to the Prophet’s PBUH mission. For the believer, it is a glad tiding of divine care, observation, and the promise of accepted intercession. For the hypocrite and the idolater, it serves as a severe warning.
فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَىٰ هَٰؤُلَاءِ شَهِيدًا
And how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you, [O Muhammad] against these [people] as a witness?
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:41)
A powerful, practical consequence flows from this knowledge. When we understand that the Imam (a.s.) of our time is alive and stands among these believing witnesses, a profound desire for absolute obedience should naturally arise within our hearts.
يَوْمَ نَدْعُو كُلَّ أُنَاسٍ بِإِمَامِهِمْ
The Day We will call every people with their Imam.
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:71)
Understanding the Prophet PBUH as a witness transforms our entire spiritual perspective. It turns our daily actions into acts of devotion performed for a beloved audience. It reassures the heart that our struggles are seen and our faith is recognised. Embracing the reality of divine witnessing is what calls us to live with both reverence and courage, knowing we are never alone and our alignment with the divine witnesses is the path to honour in both worlds.
