Summary

In this episode, the speaker explores one of the most profound theological discussions recorded between Imam al-Rida (عليه السلام) and the Abbasid so called Khalifa al-Ma’mun. The exchange centers on the Qur’anic verse that has puzzled many:

لِّيَغْفِرَ لَكَ اللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِن ذَنبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ

“So that Allah may forgive you your past and future sins.”
(Surah al-Fath 48:2)

Al-Ma’mun challenged the Imam: “If prophets are infallible, how can this verse speak of forgiveness of the Prophet’s sins?”

The Imam’s Profound Response

Imam al-Rida (ع) explained that the “sins” mentioned here are not personal transgressions—for the Prophet ﷺ never committed sin—but rather the perceived wrongdoing in the eyes of the polytheists of Mecca.

Among the idol-worshippers, no one was seen as more “sinful” than the Messenger of God ﷺ, because he defied their entire belief system. The Quraysh worshipped 360 idols alongside God. When the Prophet proclaimed monotheism (tawḥīd), calling them to abandon their idols, they saw it as an outrageous act—“a fabrication.”

Forgiveness Through Victory

When Allah granted the Prophet the conquest of Mecca, those who remained in the city either accepted Islam or left. The Prophet’s message of tawḥīd was now dominant. Thus, the verse meant:

“Your ‘sins’—that is, their accusations and rejection of you—are now forgiven in their eyes through your victory.”

This was a transformation of perception: what they once saw as rebellion was now recognized as truth.

History Repeats Itself

The speaker draws a parallel to Prophet Ibrahim (ع), who broke the idols and left one large idol standing, exposing the irrationality of idol worship. When his people could not bear the truth, they resorted to violence—“Burn him!” (Surah al-Anbiyā 68).

 قَالُوا حَرِّقُوهُ وَانصُرُوا آلِهَتَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ

They said, “Burn him and support your gods – if you are to act.”
Surah Al Anbiya (21)68)

Similarly, every prophet and imam faces propaganda, distortion, and opposition. In the modern world, this same cycle continues: Islam and Muslims are misrepresented by global western propaganda, painted as aggressors while they strive for justice and peace.

The Hope of Divine Vindication

Just as Allah vindicated His Messenger ﷺ in Mecca, the speaker prays that Allah will again turn false accusations into clarity, revealing Islam’s true nature as a faith of justice, truth, and compassion. Victory, as promised, belongs to the believers.

Al-Ṣadūq narrated in ‘Uyūn Akhbār al-Riḍā with his chain of transmission from ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Jahm, who said:

“I was present in the assembly of al-Ma’mūn while Imam al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) was with him.

Al-Ma’mūn said to him:
‘O son of the Messenger of God, is it not your belief that the prophets are infallible?’

The Imam replied, ‘Indeed, they are.’

Al-Ma’mūn then said:
‘Then what is the meaning of God’s saying: “That Allah may forgive you what has preceded of your sin and what will follow”?’

Imam al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) replied:
‘There was no one among the polytheists of Mecca considered more sinful than the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), because they worshipped three hundred and sixty idols besides Allah.

When he came to them calling them to the word of sincerity (the declaration of monotheism), this became a grave and weighty matter for them. As the Qur’an says:

“And the eminent among them went forth, saying: Continue and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended. We have not heard of this in the latest religion. This is nothing but a fabrication.”
(Surah Ṣād, 38:6–7)

When Allah, the Exalted, granted His Prophet victory over Mecca, He said to him:

‘Indeed, We have given you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you what has preceded of your sin and what will follow.’
(Surah al-Fatḥ, 48:1–2)

That is, Allah forgave your “sin” in the eyes of the polytheists of Mecca—your call to monotheism—both for what had come before and what would come after, because some of the Meccan polytheists accepted Islam, and some left Mecca.

As for those who remained, they were no longer able to deny the truth of monotheism when you called the people to it. Thus, your so-called “sin” in their view was forgiven, through your triumph and dominance over them.’

At this, al-Ma’mūn said:

‘May God bless you, O Abā al-Ḥasan!’
