In the twenty-eighth episode of our series, we reflect upon a profound divine gift: the divine tranquility that Allah SWT places directly within a believer’s heart. This is not a worldly calm, but a deep, spiritual security that transforms our entire state of being.
Worldly peace often rests on fragile foundations. A society may feel calm simply because it holds power over others or faces no immediate threat. Because of this, its sense of security is entirely conditional. The moment a true crisis emerges-a natural disaster or an unforeseen catastrophe-that superficial peace can shatter completely. You see the evidence in nations with apparent order yet high rates of inner despair, crime, and suicide. Their tranquillity does not penetrate the heart.
True, divine tranquillity operates on a different principle. It flows from a system aligned with ultimate Truth, Haqq. This tranquillity knows no dead ends. It offers security in every facet of life, both material and spiritual. The Holy Qur’ān beautifully describes this reality:
هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ جُنُودُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
“It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.”
(Surah Fath 48:4)
This is the tranquillity of the heart, a comprehensive peace that worldly circumstances cannot grant or remove.
How do we cultivate this heart-deep calm? The story of Prophet Yūsuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, provides a powerful lesson. Speaking to his prison companions, he posed a fundamental question that challenges every human tendency.
يَا صَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ أَأَرْبَابٌ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah SWT, the One, the Prevailing?
(Surah Yūsuf 12:39)
In other words, do we rely on a different ‘god’ for each of life’s needs-wealth, health, safety-or do we turn to the One, All-Powerful Creator? Relying on numerous causes as independent agents fractures the heart through a form of hidden polytheism. True tawheed involves seeing all causes for what they are: soldiers in the army of the One Commander.
وَلِلَّهِ جُنُودُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
And to Allah SWT belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth
(Surah Fath 48:4)
When we rely solely on Allah SWT, our hearts find a singular, unshakeable anchor. This reliance forms the very foundation for experiencing divine tranquility.
Reaching this level of reliance is a spiritual process that begins with knowledge but perfects itself through practice. Initially, we may intellectually understand the concept without truly feeling its effect. The transformation happens through conscious affirmation and mindful observation. When a positive event brings you calm, consciously acknowledge that Allah SWT orchestrated it. Similarly, during hardship, reaffirm that only He can provide relief, and view any helpful means as His soldiers carrying out His command.
In this way, you train your heart to perceive the divine management behind all affairs. This growing inner peace strengthens the believer and, interestingly, causes anxiety for those who oppose divine truth. Even a faint glimmer of this god-given sakīnah, when our steadfastness amplifies it, can unsettle the enemies of faith. Truly, it is a spiritual weapon and a profound mercy.
May we continually appreciate the tranquillity Allah SWT has placed in our hearts and pray for its increase. Let us nurture this divine gift through sincere reliance, knowing that with it comes a faith that grows ever stronger, by the permission of the Most Wise. To live with this divine tranquility is to carry an unassailable fortress within, a direct mercy from the Lord of all creation.
