We often speak of peace, but there is a specific, divine tranquility that Allah SWT bestows upon the hearts of the believers. This is not a feeling of calm; it is a profound spiritual state with a clear and powerful purpose. It is a gift designed to transform us from within, strengthening our conviction and preparing us for the tests of this world.
The arrival of sakina in a believer’s heart is never without reason. Its core function is to raise our spiritual state. Faith is not a static, on-off switch; it is a living reality with levels that can rise and fall. Our actions directly impact its strength. When we sin, we risk causing the very soul of our faith to withdraw, returning only with deficiency if it returns at all. This is why the divine gift of tranquility is so vital-it is a direct intervention to fortify us. As mentioned in the Holy Quran:
هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ
He is the One who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that they may increase in faith upon their faith.
(Reference: Surah Al-Fath, 48:4)
This verse makes the objective clear: tranquility comes so that faith may grow upon the faith that already exists. We must be acutely aware of this dynamic, guarding our faith from decrease and welcoming every opportunity for its increase.
The phrase “upon their faith” confirms a crucial truth: faith is already present. It is a tangible, active force in the world. We see its evidence not in abstract theory, but in real-world events that defy material calculations. Consider a small nation openly declaring its right to defend its waters and acting upon that declaration against a global superpower. Where does such strength come from? It stems from a conviction that divine support overpowers worldly might. This is the same principle seen in the stories of Qarun, whose immense wealth was swallowed by the earth, and Pharaoh, whose mighty army was drowned in the sea. Their material power was rendered meaningless against the decree of Allah SWT. These are not just historical tales; they are lasting lessons that faith, when genuine, shows itself as a power that reshapes realities.
Knowing this, our task is to internalize this belief completely. We must trust that Allah SWT backs those who believe, provided they act within the rules He has set. This requires tawakul-a sincere reliance on Allah SWT-which is not passive hope but active duty performed alongside trust. Yes, we must work to strengthen the weak and make careful worldly plans. But there is a divine calculation at play that we cannot fully understand.
Our part is to fulfill our obligations with courage, regardless of the warnings about an enemy’s apparent strength. When duty is performed with this conviction, the divine calculation comes into effect. We have seen this in those who, after the martyrdom of their scientists, chose to walk the same path with even greater resolve. We see it in the historical example of David facing Goliath: a single stone, propelled by faith, toppled a giant. Each act of defiance by the enemy should only serve to increase our faith upon our faith, solidifying our resolve until, by Allah’s SWT will, the oppressor’s terror turns to defeat and they retreat.
The path of faith is one of constant growth and testing. Divine tranquility is the nourishment for that growth, sent to fortify our hearts against fear and doubt. When we see the results of faith in the world, we are reminded that true strength belongs to Allah SWT alone. By combining sincere belief with the steady performance of our duty, we align ourselves with that strength, trusting that the final outcome is always in His hands.
