In this episode of our series, we reflect on the profound gift of sakinah, the divine tranquillity that Allah SWT sends into the hearts of the believers. This spiritual calm is far more than a feeling; it is a guiding light for our lives. The true essence of sakinah in Islam is this divine assurance that steadies the heart and illuminates the path forward.
Life often presents us with crossroads, where multiple paths seem open and the correct choice is unclear. In other words, we face indecisiveness. This uncertainty can breed anxiety and hesitation, draining our spiritual and emotional energy as we stand paralysed at the fork in the road.
The gift of sakinah provides the clarity we need. It offers an inner insight that allows us to distinguish truth from falsehood and recognise the right path. Because of this divine guidance, our anxiety melts away, replaced by a firm conviction. We find a verse that beautifully captures this:
هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ جُنُودُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
“It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.”
(Surah Fath 48:4)
With this tranquillity, we can move forward with purpose, our energy focused entirely on the chosen direction.
In times of great stress or trial, believers can sometimes become divided in to different groups. Those who are tranquil and can make the right decision in a timely manner. Others who are lost and bewildered anxiously choosing different paths in hesitation and constantly changing routes. While some may look to others, anxiously observing what everyone else is doing to find their own way. Our own shortcomings and past mistakes can also cloud our judgement, making it difficult to determine the correct course.
This could be a test for our growth (دفعي) or a consequence of our historical actions (رفعي).
Still, sakinah descends to cut through this noise into the heart of the believer. It enables a believer to make a clear, decisive choice without the stress of what others might do or think. This is the core mechanism of sakinah in Islam: it allows us to act with confidence, free from the paralysis of social pressure or internal doubt. Once we determine the right path, we can expend all our effort in that single, purposeful direction, preventing the wasteful cycle of moving forward only to hesitate and step back again.
The relationship between sakinah and faith is a beautiful, self-reinforcing cycle. The tranquillity that Allah SWT sends increases our faith, and this increased faith, in turn, invites more sakinah into our hearts. Each one nourishes and strengthens the other in a continuous, virtuous spiral upwards.
This dynamic is captured in the phrase
لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ
“That they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith.”
(Surah Fath 48:4)
In this way, sakinah becomes the spiritual light that illuminates our way, much like the light promised to the believers on the Day of Judgement. As described:
“On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], \”Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally.\” That is what is the great attainment.”
(Surah Al Hadid 57:12)
The more we have of one, the more we gain of the other.
We often measure success by visible, worldly outcomes. Yet the ultimate victory in Islam is not merely a military or material conquest. The real triumph is the increased faith and divine pleasure that believers secure within their hearts. For instance, consider the pledge of allegiance under the tree at Hudaybiyyah.
The companions faced immense uncertainty, but their sincere pledge pleased Allah SWT. The real reward was first the sakinah that Allah SWT sent upon them, then the promised conquest. The verse states:
“Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree… so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest.”
(Surah Al Fath 48:18)
The imminent military victory was desired, but the real, lasting victory was the solidified faith and tranquillity in their hearts at that very moment.
Let us, therefore, seek from Allah SWT this profound tranquillity that clarifies our path, steadies our hearts in turmoil, and deepens our faith with every breath. The greatest conquest we can ever achieve is the one that happens quietly within our own souls, under the gentle shade of Allah SWT’s mercy and guidance. To understand and embody sakinah in Islam is to secure the truest form of victory: a heart at peace, anchored in divine certainty.
